One and Done Selections - Rocket Mortgage

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Owen Vrabel, Matt Miller and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

Joe Nicely - Cameron Davis

Alternate - Kevin Kisner

I rarely bite on defending champions, but there are a couple of factors that lead me to Cameron Davis - the reigning Rocket Mortgage Classic champ - this week. The talented young Aussie has been white-hot as of late with three top-eight finishes over his last six starts and he’s gained over four strokes on Approach in each of his last two measured starts. As this OAD contest begins to wind down, Davis also leaves me a little flexibility down the stretch as I try to catch up to our leader, Owen.

Yearly Earnings - $8,375,208
Yearly Cuts Made - 23/29

Josh Bennett - Maverick McNealy

Alternate - Cameron Young

This is one week of OAD where I'm not taking into consideration many stats, or much of anything really. This is more of a "feel play" for me. Mav doesn't jump out at you on the stat categories, so he's probably not on many people's radar to win. However, just looking at how his season has gone (especially recently), it just feels to me like he's hung around towards the top of the leaderboards enough times now that he's eventually just going to win one. As we know in golf, you just have to keep giving yourself chances and good things will happen, and he seems to be doing that this year. With a 21st and an 8th place finish the last 2 years at this event, it feels like this is going to be that event where he breaks through and gets the win.

Yearly Earnings - $6,070,987
Yearly Cuts Made - 23/29

Spencer Aguiar - Max Homa

Alternate - Will Zalatoris

The fact that I think Will Zalatoris is going to win this event will make the Max Homa pick perplexing, but I am trying to figure out a way to create as likely of a path to winning this contest as I can, which forces my hand to hold Zalatoris for a bigger money event down the road.

If Zalatoris wins, that will be great with all the exposure I have to him in various other areas, but a victory still leaves me over one million dollars down from Owen, and I would prefer to take a final stand with my limited player pool when the payout is larger than we have this week. Consider this a game theory play, but I would lean towards Zalatoris if all things were equal.

Yearly Earnings - $8,006,247
Yearly Cuts Made - 26/29

Matt Miller - Russell Henley

Alternate -

We're looking at a pure birdie fest this week in Detroit and I'm looking for a guy who can go low and make birdies in bunches. That is why I'm choosing to go with Russell Henley. Henley has been a bit under the radar as of late and that's mostly due to poor finishes. He has not logged a top 20 finish since mid March. Not exactly inspiring.

That said, as we dive deeper into Russ' stats, there's actually a lot to like. Henley is still fourth in the field on approach over the last 36 rounds, he ranks fourth in opportunities gained over the last 36 rounds and is 11th in birdie or better. Stats like that should go a long way this week. Ultimately the winner is going to come down to making birdie putts but the more looks you give yourself the better chance you have at paying them off.

Henley is also a guy who can go low, we saw him shoot -23 earlier this year at the Sony and get his heart ripped out by Hideki Matsuyama. He is going to need to get into the 20s this week if he wants to have a chance to win.
Another positive, Henley hasn't won on tour since 2017. Some have even labeled him as a guy who "can't win." Other players in that category a month and a half ago: Xander Schauffele, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tony Finau. Notice a trend? It's Russell Henley week.

Yearly Earnings - $6,079,884
Yearly Cuts Made - 21/29

Andrew Putters - Tony Finau

Alternate - Scott Stallings

Top 10 Tony is BACK BABY!  Tony is back to his normal self it seems on the golf course.  This course looks like it should set up absolutely perfect for him.  What we classify as an “easy” course plus 4, yes 4, par 5s.  Are you kidding me????  Tony will light this place up and go back to back.

Yearly Earnings - $3,860,543
Yearly Cuts Made - 17/29

Owen Vrabel - Cameron Young

Yearly Earnings - $10,399,973
Yearly Cuts Made - 23/29
