One and Done Selections - PGA Championship

Joe Nicely - Xander Schauffele

Alternate - Rory McIlroy

As I continue to tread water in this OAD contest, I head into the year’s second major, the PGA Championship, in need of a jolt...and a win. The same could be said of my selection this week, Xander Schauffele, a player that has been a mainstay on major championship leaderboards for the last three or so years, but has failed to actually grab a victory. It’s been a similar story for the X-Man over the past year, as his great play has only led to heartbreak and - I imagine - a not-insignificant amount of frustration for the young star. He let real chances slip away at Colonial, Shadow Creek, Scottsdale, and most recently Augusta National.

The “can’t close” narrative is just that...a narrative. One win erases all the chatter and Schauffele heads to the Ocean Course this week with a terrific chance to grab that elusive first major victory. We can expect this Kiawah Island behemoth to be difficult in almost every possible way and there’s perhaps no player I’d rather have more than Schauffele in the “can do everything well on long, hard golf courses with uncertain weather conditions in a major-championship environment" department. His major record speaks for itself: 14/15 career cuts made with six top-five finishes. A breakthrough win is coming for Xander and - hopefully - me...maybe we can do it together this week.

Spencer Aguiar - Viktor Hovland

Alternate - Collin Morikawa

If I had a full arsenal of players at my disposal, one of Justin Thomas or Xander Schauffele would be my selection this week. However, as things stand, I will have to roll with the third guy in my model, one who is about as buzzed as can be in this industry. Maybe that explains the high look we often see out of Viktor Hovland!

The Norweigan does just about everything you would be hoping to see from a potential PGA Championship winner, and it is easy to understand the comparisons he has drawn to Rory McIlroy early in his career. The 23-year-old ranks second in my model over a two-year sample size when looking at a combination of strokes gained off the tee/strokes gained approach, and he comes in an impressive 10th in par-five birdie or better percentage. With the ability to try and front-run this contest slightly, I will go with the chalk here and make everyone beat me in a different direction.

Yearly Earnings - $6,775,697

Yearly Cuts Made - 15/19

Josh Bennett - Dustin Johnson

Alternate - Tyrrell Hatton

The number one player in the world is still on the board for me, so it’s time to roll him out. He hasn’t been flashy recently, nor has he played much, but I think that’s a good thing. DJ has gone on cold runs in the past just to come back and tear apart a field when nobody saw it coming. I think this week is that week. He’s dropped from tournaments because of a knee issue, “poor” recent form, didn’t get put into featured groups; a lot of reasons to look elsewhere. However, you can’t beat DJ when he turns it on. He’s uber long off the tee which is great for a 7800-yard course, he’s a good ball striker and has a great short game. The putter runs hot and cold, but if what we’re told about the greens being “easier” to putt on this week is true, that’s even better for DJ. If the knee injury is serious, then I do worry about this pick, but otherwise, I think he’s got a solid chance to run away with this thing.

Yearly Earnings -$2,746,977

Yearly Cuts Made - 14/19

Andrew Putters - Joaquin Niemann

Alternate - Adam Scott

Kiawah Island Ocean Course…what else needs to be said. Well, here we go!! First of all, it’s long, Niemann has plenty of length to compete on a course that grades out at about 7800 yards long (longest in Major Championship History). Secondly, do you remember the “War on the Shore” in 1991? I do, and it produced major major winds. I think we will see high winds even on the calmest of days. Niemann is a very low-ball hitter. Lastly, I’m thinking single digits will win this trophy. Niemann can rely more on his strengths which are balls striking from the tee & fairway. So saying all this with the combination of my #DartPlat & #HeartPlay, Joaquín Niemann is your 2021 PGA Champion!
