One and Done Selections - Farmers Insurance Open

Joe Nicely - Will Zalatoris

Alternate - Tony Finau

After beginning this season with a couple of underwhelming performances from what I would consider “conservative” picks, I feel as though it’s time to move into an aggressive frame of mind for the first “real” tournament of 2022…the Farmers Insurance Open.

I think there’s certainly some risk that comes with Will Zalatoris this week. He’s young, looked sluggish over the Swing Season, and has a putting stroke that can sometimes be scary-bad. However, Willie Z also brings tournament-winning upside to the table thanks to his elite distance off the tee, long-iron play, and overall ball-striking ability.

He scored a T7 in last year’s Farmers and heads into this year’s edition with tons of positive momentum off an “I’m back!” performance at last week’s AmEx that included a second-round 61. It’s definitely possible that things could go sideways for the kids on Torrey’s Poa greens this week, but it’s time to take a chance in this contest and Zalatoris’ tee-to-green ability is built to handle the type of massive challenge that the South Course will provide.

Owen Vrabel - Xander Schauffele

Alternate - Marc Leishman

Xander Schauffele, the San Diego kid, played high school golf at Torrey Pines, which, until last year, hasn't quite correlated to PGA Tour success at the Farmers Insurance Open. That being said, he finished runner-up at the Farmer's last year with an impressive weekend performance gaining over five strokes putting. On top of that, he finished seventh in the US Open at Torrey Pines in 2021 and it feels like he is finally starting to reap the benefits of being familiar with this course. Xander was able to shake some rust off at the Sentry TOC a few weeks ago. I expect his irons to be ready to roll this week. His familiarity with the green complexes, in conjunction with his strong off the Tee and approach game, make him a perfect fit for One and Done this week.

Yearly Earnings - $27,014

Matt Miller - Tony Finau

Alternate -

This week I will be going with Tony Finau. In his last five appearances at the Farmers Insurance Open, Finau has four finishes inside the top six. In addition to his course history, the game is starting to trend in the right direction. Finau continued his good iron play last week, gaining strokes in approach for the seventh consecutive event. He also turned around some of his recent putting woes, gaining strokes putting on the field for the first time in his last five starts.
Statistics and course history aside, Finau feels like a nice play for this event because he's not a guy I am going to be dying to use later in the season. Despite his consistent play, Finau holds very little win equity so I don't feel the need to hold onto him for a major or big event.

Yearly Earnings - $220,000

Josh Bennett - Tony Finau

Alternate - Patrick Reed

This is maybe the easiest pick I’ll make all year. We can talk about course fit all we want or a player’s strengths and weaknesses, but we really don’t have to go much past Tony’s history in this event. Whatever combination of skills it is that elevates gameplay here, Tony obviously has it. Eight years in a row he’s finished in the top 25, half of those were 6th or better, including taking second last year. His recent form isn’t spectacular, but I’m not sure we should really care in the fall swing and mostly birdie-fests. The best players tend to rise to the occasion, especially in high-strength fields and events where making par is much more common. I think Tony will have his game ready to go at a place he crushes this week.

Yearly Earnings - $201,100

Andrew Putters - Will Zalatoris

Alternate - Jon Rahm

This is the ideal setup for Zalatoris. That is if he can get the putter hot on the North Course. He is in the top 20 in driving distance and the top 10 in SG T2G. His ability to play solid is going to be there week in and week out. His ability to compete to win tournaments now and in the future is going to be based on his putting performance. He ranks around 150th on tour in SG Putting and stills can have strong finishes. I can’t wait to watch this week with Willy Z in contention down the stretch.

Yearly Earnings - $49,250
