I don’t know which is more frustrating…completely missing on a pick or having the winner as your alternate. I got a dose of each last week, as my actual pick Russell Henley underperformed, while my 1A and alternate, Max Homa, took down the Wells Fargo. Insert RAGE GIF here…
As we head to Texas for the AT&T Byron Nelson, it feels as though this is a golf course on which anything can happen, as K.H. Lee took down the title at 25-under last year in TPC Craig Ranch’s debut on the PGA Tour schedule. Even though I think you can easily go outside the box this week, I’m going to stay very much inside of it with Sam Burns. He’s a sensible pick after a runner-up on this layout last year and he’s a player that I want to utilize this year, but don’t have a clear plan for. All that said, if you’re tailing my picks this year, you should probably roll with my alternate every week!

I am asking for whatever comes my way by going off-script for this pick of not using a top-30 player in the world for a contest that doesn't demand anything abnormal, but here we are this week. To be honest, I struggled with what to do on this selection because I don't have a solid lean outside of Justin Thomas, and because of that exact answer I just stated, I don't believe in playing anyone that I might want to use later in the year is the route I want to go for the contest.
So after some back-and-forth internal discussions, I landed on Aaron Wise - a golfer that tends to run hot and cold in his performances and might just be hitting his stride at the right moment for us to go outside the box. The American has one of the best combinations in this field of par-five scoring and finding success at longer courses, and I am willing to take a gamble that he continues his blistering run where he has provided back-to-back top-21 finishes. In fairness, this selection might be the epitome of "getting too cute," but let's go for broke in an aggressive manner - all while saving our big guns for later.

Just when I thought I was clawing back into the contest, a couple of the boys in here hit Homa last week and sent me chasing again. I’m really liking the spot Burns is in this week so I’m rolling with him. If you watch him play at all, you’ll have noticed he has been notably bad off the tee the last few weeks. However, he’s been extremely good in all other facets of his game. I think that’s a good recipe for success this week because TPC Craig Ranch does not require you to be an accurate driver of the golf ball.
The course is long and gets longer by forcing a couple of layups off the tee on some longer holes (including par 5’s at times). Having length off the tee without much need for accuracy, combined with a stellar approach and around the green game from there should work wonders for Burns this week. Although one year of history may not be a perfect indicator, he did finish second in this event last year, so it at least somewhat appears his style of play can work here. Banking on that being the case, I have some more catching up to do!

We are going chalk 101 this week. This course is a perfect fit for Sam Burns. TPC Craig Ranch is nothing but a birdie fest (not to mention 4 par 5s). Burns’s iron game has been solid this year and should be at an advantage off the tee. I know we have not seen much of him lately, but I am not worried. Sam Burns is a solid play this week.
