One and Done Selections - Honda Classic
Joe Nicely - Keith Mitchell
Alternate - Jhonattan Vegas
The less said about the Genesis the better. As far as I’m concerned it was simply “one of those weeks” that happens a few times throughout the PGA Tour schedule. It would be nice to have a cushy bounce-back spot after my OAD disaster at Riviera, but instead, I’ll attempt to get back on track at one of the most volatile events of the season, the Honda Classic.
The Honda is so tough to predict due to the difficulty of its host course, PGA National. A tricky, often breezy layout that features over 75 bunkers, has water in play on 15 holes, and a signature three-hole stretch known as the “Bear Trap”. I suppose many will look to the consistency of a Sungjae Im or chase the Florida-native narrative with a Billy Horschel in this tough spot.
Those are likely fine routes to take, but I’ll cast my lot with a Tennessee boy that played his college golf in Georgia. Keith Mitchell, a former Honda winner, undoubtedly has the game to tame PGA National, but there have been lots of ups and downs since a 2019 victory in this event that felt like his breakout moment at the time. After taking a couple of steps back, Mitchell now has his game back on track in a big way and comes into this year’s Honda on the heels of top-12 finishes in three of his four 2022 starts. He grades out first in this week’s field in SG: Ball Striking over the last 12 rounds and I expect that tee-to-green form to lead to another big week for him at PGA National.

Spencer Aguiar - Daniel Berger
Alternate - Billy Horschel
The safer route for me would be Billy Horschel, who has a handful of spots yearly where he is in play but mostly isn't a golfer I am looking to use weekly. The form and stats both look solid, but I will shoot for the moon on a golfer that I think will go overlooked in OAD contests because of the uncertainty around his back.
Daniel Berger graded twice as well for me when comparing him to the field from a statistical sense, including against this week's favorite Sungjae Im, and his ranks read like a beautiful novel. Berger is graded fourth in weighted tee-to-green, third on challenging courses, number one in windy conditions, 14th on fast Bermuda, first in par-three scoring, first in scrambling, first in bogey avoidance + weighted proximity, fourth in sand saves and third in ball-striking. To me, that shows a golfer who would be the betting favorite if we didn't have these concerns around his health, and I am going to assume he feels well since he is here this week. I like playing these contests in an aggressive fashion, so let's keep the pedal to the metal.

As you have probably heard over and over this week, Honda is a tough tournament to predict. Implosions everywhere, field isn’t great, there isn’t a lot you can be confident in other than it will be fun to watch. A guy that seems to find ways to make cuts and play well when scores are not as great is Billy Horschel. Typically he won’t pop in stat models because he doesn’t really crush at anything, but you don’t really need to do that this week. He’s a grinder and just finds a way to get it done, and that’s all you need. He’s had some good finishes here before and he’s been playing well as of late, hopefully, that will translate into a good finish this week.

Andrew Putters - Sungjae Im
Alternate - Billy Horschel
I’ve had this tournament circled for Sungjae for life. The 2020 former winner here is an absolute perfect match for PGA National. His overall game is really strong all the way from the tee box through the green. He also has strong recent form with 2 top-10s in the last 5 events.
