One and Done Selections - Open Championship

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Owen Vrabel, Matt Miller and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

Joe Nicely - Matthew Fitzpatrick

Can Matt Freakin’ Fitzpatrick win back-to-back major championships? Call me crazy, but I think it is well within the realm of possibility. Fitzy has been ballin’ out all year, form that culminated with a breakthrough victory at Brookline. He knocked the rust off with a neat and tidy T6 in last week’s Scottish Open and now the Englishman heads to a classical links layout in the Old Course that he’s well suited for.

Spencer Aguiar - Tommy Fleetwood

Alternate - Dustin Johnson

Maybe this comes from me trying not to have 100% exposure to Dustin Johnson, but it is the last big event of the season if I want to make up this nearly three million dollar deficit. To do that, I am going to have to come up with someone outside of the box, and Fleetwood seems to fit that narrative in OAD contests to a T.

It is worth noting that Fleetwood is a slight favorite over DJ in head-to-head matchups this week, so I will be looking to diversify my portfolio and gaining some much-needed exposure to the Englishman, who I do have my biggest bet on this week to beat Tyrrell Hatton in a matchup.

*** Part of the reason I took Fleetwood over DJ is because of the potential for a weather bias. Morning wave on Thursday might have an edge for any close calls.

Matt Miller - Dustin Johnson

This week I'm going with Dustin Johnson. Despite being off the grid because of his LIV status, DJ is quietly rounding into some pretty good form. He finished T3 at the most recent LIV event in Portland and post tournament spoke confidently about his play. He was disappointed that he didn't find more fairways off the tee but stated that he felt extremely confident he would put it close with a wedge in his hand. This week players will need to be on point with their wedges if they wish to succeed and the fairways will be extremely wide for the former world number one.

In addition to his recent form, Johnson has a pretty good track record at the Open Championship. He has four career top ten finishes at this event and made the cut both times he teed it up at St Andrews. If the wind picks up, we welcome it. DJ ranks first in the field in strokes gained total in windy conditions over his last 50 rounds.

DJ also gets to enter the week with no distractions. Zero LIV Golf players received press conferences this week. While many saw it as a slap in the face and them being shunned, I actually think it did these guys a favor. There is no crazy line of questioning DJ is required to deal with this week, he can just put his head down and work.
