One and Done Selections - Players Championship

Joe Nicely - Webb Simpson

Alternate - Collin Morikawa

For the past couple of years, the running joke in the RotoBaller OAD contest is when - and how many times - we’re gonna use Webb Simpson. I’m pretty sure Josh and Spencer have used him against me at least three times each over the past two years, but them’s the breaks.

I’ll be using my ONE Webb bullet this week at THE PLAYERS Championship, an event that always feels like it’s one step above a crapshoot. The Pete Dye layout was designed to prevent anyone “style” of player from having an advantage, so it makes sense that Webb - a golfer that’s never gonna lead the PGA Tour in any specific statistical category except maybe made cuts - has been so successful at the Stadium Course.

Simpson romped to victory in the 2018 edition of this event with T16 finishes in the 2017 and 2019 PLAYERS. Like clockwork, he’s made the cut in all four of his starts this year with two finishes of sixth-place or better and I expect a similarly solid performance this week at TPC Sawgrass.

Yearly Earnings - $1,836,198

Yearly Cuts Made - 8/9

Spencer Aguiar - Justin Thomas

Alternate - Viktor Hovland

The Players Championship... The event where every big-name player in the world is competing, yet I somehow have no players left for this contest. There are always ways around having a limited pool of golfers - one such approach would be selecting Webb Simpson for the second time this year - but I have a gut feeling that my teammates are onto me at this point.

If I did have everyone left at my disposal, I would have selected Jon Rahm. Contests can get out of control for you when you make a small mistake, and it has prevented me from having the Spaniard in a spot that I believe will produce a massive payday.

Am I in love with the Thomas play? No. But there is just too much money on the line for me to try and deviate away from someone with known win equity. The American has 13 career PGA Tour titles, and my model ranked him as the best golfer in the world for your open tests that don't reward a specific game type when I ran it earlier in the season. TPC Sawgrass is about as volatile as they come from a year-over-year production standpoint, but two top-11s over his past four tries is almost as good of history as you will find at the venue. While there are a lot of unknowns around what to expect with the state of Thomas' game, I am willing to ignore his missed cut at the Genesis Invitational after his grandfather died, as well as his career-worst 5.9 shots that he lost off the tee at the WGC. That event produced a ton of strange strokes gained metrics, and I am not sure we should take them at face value.

Yearly Earnings - $3,318,288

Yearly Cuts Made - 8/9

Josh Bennett - Patrick Cantlay

Alternate - Adam Scott

Just so we are all aware, this is a place where I play Webb Simpson normally. By now, this is probably the third or fourth time I try to play him, but I’ve promised I’m not playing him in protest of the trolling from the team, so I’m going with my next-best option in Cantlay. His game is the exact type of game you want for this course. He’s an elite ball-striker, can control his ball really well and he’s really improved his short-game which used to be a big issue for him. Although he hasn’t played a ton, he hasn’t finished outside of 17th since mid-October and he also has two top-25 finishes in this event. There could be some concern having withdrawn last week due to an illness and also not having played in almost a month, but Cantlay almost always played a limited schedule and he has plenty of history coming back and playing after a long layoff. In the ”rest vs. rust” debate, I think Cantlay benefits from the rest rather than gets hurt from rust. Looking forward to him continuing his elite run of finishes and cashing a big check in a big-money event.

Yearly Earnings - $232,500

Yearly Cuts Made - 6/9

Andrew Putters - Justin Thomas

Alternate - Viktor Hovland

Sometimes you just get that feeling in your gut. Welp…….I’ve got it this week. JT will make his comeback from recent suspect play this week. We know all about his talent level, and he has some success on Pete Dye-designed tracks. And another reason I like JT this week is almost no one is talking about him. So if you want to be a contrarian in your OAD league, play Justin Thomas.

Yearly Earnings - $940,140

Yearly Cuts Made - 6/9
