One and Done Selections - Sony Open

Joe Nicely - Sungjae Im

Alternate - Kevin Kisner

Really excited to be back for 2021! While I believe there are several viable strategies for season-long OAD contests, it is always nice to get off to a good start. In an attempt to get out of the gate quickly, I’m firing away with Sungjae Im, a player that appears to be back on track after going a little sideways after last year’s COVID layoff.
There are several viable players in this Sony field and - at just over 7,000 yards - this is a great course to use a player like Kevin Kisner or Zach Johnson...guys with games that might not fit the lengthy layouts that we regularly see on the PGA Tour schedule nowadays. While I strongly considered going in that direction, Sungjae led last week’s elite Sentry Tournament of Champions in Strokes Gained: T2G with a massive mark of +9.5 and managed a T5 despite losing over five strokes putting. I expect him to improve in that area this week on Waialae’s Bermuda greens (historically his best surface by far) and he’s been rock-solid in his two previous Sony starts. The kid appeared to be in store for a huge 2020 before COVID hit and I look for him to get back on track this year.

Spencer Aguiar - Webb Simpson

Alternate - Sungjae Im

It's the start of the year for OAD contests, and I believe that means most will come out of the gates slower than usual. In theory, that is a reasonable option if you are thinking about targeting golfers like Sungjae Im, Daniel Berger, Kevin Kisner or Abraham Ancer, but I find myself in the mindset of wanting to come out firing with the biggest gun in this field.

About 3-5 times a year, most notably because of his course history at venues like the RBC Heritage, Waste Management or Wyndham Championship, Simpson transforms into this pristine OAD option that you save your bullets for during those weeks. That is a perfectly fine mindset that I can't argue with on the surface, but it opens up an opportunity for us to grab the American at lower ownership than expected because of the wherewithal within the industry that there are other locations to deploy him during the season.

Waialae Country Club hasn't exactly taken on that moniker for Simpson over the years, but I would be careful in shifting away from the 35-year-old because of his lack of past wins at the venue. The eighth-ranked player in the world has strung together five straight top-13 results, including back-to-back top-five finishes in 2018 and 2020, which partially helps to explain why we saw both Joe and Josh select him during this contest last year before he entered the category of being a "star." I will take a page out of both of their books by selecting Webb Simpson and hope that I will be able to land him as a solo act in the first tournament of 2021.

Josh Bennett - Kevin Kisner

Alternate - Webb Simpson

There are only a few courses on tour that fit Kisner’s game perfectly and this is one of them. The last five time’s he’s played this event, he’s been in the top 5 in three of them. Instead of saving him for down the road at another course fit for him, I’m going to pull the trigger now while he’s playing good golf. Not long ago he was in a playoff to win another event at a course good for him (RSM), and the stats indicate he’s doing well what he normally does well (finds fairways, putts the lights out).

Putting can be volatile, so getting him while he’s towards the top of his putting game is key for me. He’s also coming in after just playing the Sentry TOC, which is something that has been known to be helpful to guys that play the Sony the next week. It’s a good time to play him because the field isn’t very strong, so he vaults himself into one of the top players in the field because of that alone. I’m a huge fan of Webb Simpson every week, but I’m an even bigger fan of Kiz kicking off my OAD season.

Andrew Putters - Cameron Smith

Alternate - Abraham Ancer

Well, hang onto your hats because 2021 is underway. Now, this is my first year doing the One & Done Contest with the staff so naturally I should win going away!!!! If you have listened to our show, The Turn, (https://youtu.be/rJ2IKYtcrOs) at all you must know that I make my picks by feel and then look for statistics to back up my decision. My pick this week is Cam Smith. First, I love his natural ability to grind, he is never going to give up. He is going to fight for every shot throughout the tournament. Secondly, he is from Australia, wind will not be an issue for him this week. Thirdly, he is a great putter. He ranks in the top 20 across the board in every putting statistic. I know he is the defending champion but don’t let that steer you away from him this week. Cam is an automatic top 10 with a lot more upside for this year’s Sony Open.
