One and Done Selections - WGC Concession & Puerto Rico

Joe Nicely - Patrick Reed

Alternate - Will Zalatoris

Last week was a true missed opportunity for me to gain ground on Spencer, as his pick, Bryson DeChambeau, missed the cut at Riviera, while my guy, Patrick Cantlay, headed into the weekend right in the thick of things. Unfortunately, Cantlay failed to make putts over the weekend, forcing me to settle for a mediocre T15 result in the Genesis.

Oh well, there’s always this week, as WGC events always provide the chance of a big payday. With this event headed to a course in The Concession that we’ve never seen before, I feel there are numerous routes we could take, as it’s basically just an educated guess as to what will work on this layout.

After his victory at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, I promised myself that going forward I would ignore the stats and simply play Patrick Reed on “hard” golf courses. While we aren’t 100% sure that The Concession fits that mold, the length, bunkering, and green complexes remind me enough of Augusta National to make me feel that short game ability will be paramount this week. Reed’s is perhaps the best in the world and while he may be golf’s official villain, he’s a scrambling, grinding, big-tournament-winning villain...so I’m willing to throw on my black hat and roll with the bad guy this week.

Puerto Rico - Emiliano Grillo

Alternate - Thomas Pieters

Yearly Earnings - $1,330,648

Yearly Cuts Made - 5/6

Spencer Aguiar - Jon Rahm

Alternate - Viktor Hovland

I seem to have a horrible habit of Hulk-smashing myself with Bryson DeChambeau in these contests. Maybe it is better from a game-theory standpoint that I don't have to worry about selecting the big-hitting American anymore, but it was still a massive jolt towards my early season momentum to burn one of the best players in the world.

With all of that being said, I can't let one mistake compound into another and will look to quickly get back on my high-horse for the two-event selection process this week. I've obviously been extremely aggressive to begin the year, and while it does come back to bite you are some point if you shrink your player pool down to virtually nothing, I do have a built-out plan to negate any of those concerns.

For the WGC, I will be rolling with Jon Rahm, who I believe should be listed as the man to beat with his 12 straight top-23 finishes on tour. Rahm has been a hot putter away over the last few months from giving himself a chance to get back into the winner's circle, and any improvement with his flat stick immediately places him into a category that very few golfers on tour can match if his irons and driver remain dialed-in. I most likely will have to reduce the quality of players I pick for a little bit after this week, but it is relatively easy to find Bermuda specialists to mix-and-match for the upcoming stretch.

Puerto Rico - Justin Suh

Alternate - Emiliano Grillo

Yearly Earnings - $3,035,725

Yearly Cuts Made - 5/6

Josh Bennett - Xander Schauffele

Alternate - Patrick Cantlay

The good news is that I am guaranteed some cash this week, a big step up from what the usual has been in this contest so far. I’m rolling with everyone’s favorite no-cut specialist this week(sorry Nagels), Xander Schauffele. He’s good in these kinds of events because his game has very minimal weaknesses all-around. In an event with a cut, one bad round of putting will get him in trouble. In events like this one, he can easily make up for it knowing there are three other rounds to catch up. He’s a scorer and just an overall gamer, and players like him just find their way to the top of the leaderboard in elite fields like this one. I expect his length will be an advantage on this course and his ball-striking abilities should give him a ton of good chances to score all weekend. I have no doubts he will continue his elite no-cut play this weekend.

Puerto Rico - Thomas Pieters

Alternate - Emiliano Grillo

Yearly Earnings - $76,136

Yearly Cuts Made - 3/6

Andrew Putters - Dustin Johnson

Alternate - Tony Finau

Just because on The Turn Fantasy Golf Podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-turn/id1517788197#episodeGuid=0e854b9c-45e7-49a6-8597-173625f40464) I said that my heart was with Tony Finau, that doesn’t mean my mind is with him too. I know you must use your DJ pick wisely, and here we go. DJ’s game basically speaks for itself. No one, other than Tiger, has had more success in WGC events. DJ is coming into the event with six prior WGC Championships. From everything we can tell, this course should be a test for these guys, which only plays into DJ’s favor. His T2G game is always strong. His recent form is good, and he now has a week under his belt since he has come back from the Middle East. What else can I say but, “In DJ we trust.”

Puerto Rico - Matt Wallace

Alternate - Patrick Rodgers

Yearly Earnings - $706,540

Yearly Cuts Made - 4/6
