4 years agoSan Diego Padres starter Joe Musgrove tossed six frames of one-run baseball Wednesday against the Oakland Athletics, settling for a no-decision. The right-hander struck out five in a crisp 99 pitches, yielding two hits and three walks. Musgrove's only mistake was a solo shot to infielder Jed Lowrie in the second inning, leaving with a 3-1 lead before the bullpen squandered his victory. Through 21 starts (122 ⅓ innings), the 28-year-old's breakout campaign runs to the tune of a 2.87 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 28 percent strikeout rate. Currently pitching like the Friars ace, Musgrove will take on the Miami Marlins at home next Tuesday. He'll be a solid SP2 in that matchup.--Andrew Le - RotoBaller

3 years agoThe San Diego Padres and right-hander Joe Musgrove are reportedly close to agreeing upon a five-year contract for about $100 million, according to Jon Heyman. The two sides have yet to officially close the deal but at this point, it appears that it will just be a matter of time. Musgrove is in the midst of a career year in San Diego, posting an 8-3 record, 2.63 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 106 strikeouts over 109 1/3 innings of work. Musgrove sticking around for the next five years is a big boost to the San Diego pitching staff as he was scheduled to become a free agent after the 2022 season.--Matt T - RotoBaller

3 years agoThe San Diego Padres and representatives for starting pitcher Joe Musgrove have recently resumed talks about a long-term contract extension, and multiple sources said there is optimism that a deal could be completed this week. Musgrove has made it clear he doesn't want to continue talking through the final months of the season and is willing to reach free agency if a deal isn't reached soon. The 29-year-old right-hander made the All-Star team for the first time in his career by going 8-2 with a 2.42 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 102 strikeouts and 23 walks in 104 innings over 16 starts. He's unlikely to give the Friars a hometown discount, but the Padres probably don't want to lose him in the midst of a career year.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

3 years agoSan Diego Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove had a fantastic outing against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday. He pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and four walks while striking out six. Unfortunately, he wound up with a no decision as the Padres eventually won the game in 10 innings. The 29-year-old has been nothing short of sensational this year. Across 15 starts, he's gone 8-2 with a 2.09 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP. He's earned a quality start in all but one of his 15 outings. His next start -- which will be his final start before the All-Star break -- is going to be a challenging one against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field next Wednesday. Despite the tough pitching environment, fantasy managers should have no hesitation in starting Musgrove for the matchup.--Andrew Ericksen - RotoBaller

3 years agoSan Diego Padres starting pitcher Joe Musgrove proved himself mortal on Thursday by allowing a season-high six earned runs in his club's 6-2 loss to the Phillies. The right-hander cruised through the first five innings by retiring 12 consecutive batters at one point, but was ultimately undone by a Kyle Schwarber two-run homer and a J.T. Realmuto three-run shot in the sixth inning. It was the first time all year that Musgrove allowed more than two earned runs in a start as he finished the contest with seven hits allowed and a 1/1 K/BB through six complete frames. The 29-year-old still owns an outstanding 2.12 ERA and 0.95 WHIP as he'll look to bounce back in a matchup versus the rival Dodgers on the road next week.--Riley Mrack - RotoBaller
