Marlins Calling Up Jordan Groshans
2 years agoThe Miami Marlins will select infielder Jordan Groshans' contract from Triple-A Jacksonville ahead of the team's game on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies, according to sources. Groshans, the team's No. 12 prospect per MLB Pipeline, was hitting .301/.399/.416 with an .814 OPS, two home runs, 10 RBI, 14 runs scored and a stolen base in 31 games for Jacksonville to earn the call-up. The 22-year-old was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays at the trade deadline early last month. The former first-rounder is worth picking up down the stretch in deep mixed and NL-only leagues, as he should see enough playing time the rest of the way to contribute in those formats. Groshans has recently become more of a hit over power guy, and he hit just three long balls in 103 combined game with Jacksonville, Triple-A Buffalo and Single-A Dunedin.Source: Sports Grid - Craig Mish
Brandon Lowe Retreats To The Bench
2 years agoTampa Bay Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe is absent from the starting lineup on Tuesday for Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays. Lowe has gone hitless in his last 14 at-bats with four strikeouts in his last five games, so Game 1 of a doubleheader is a good time to rest him. There's a good chance he'll be back in the lineup for Game 2 against Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah. The 28-year-old has been held back by injuries in 2022 and is hitting only .221/.308/.383 with eight homers, 25 RBI, 31 runs and a stolen base in 235 at-bats. Taylor Walls is playing second and hitting eighth against Jays right-hander Julian Merryweather in Game 1. Walls will be a low-upside DFS dart throw.Source: Baseball Press
Harold Ramirez Sitting In Game 1
2 years agoTampa Bay Rays outfielder Harold Ramirez is not in the starting lineup for Game 1 of a doubleheader on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. It's a good time for Ramirez to take a little breather, as he's gone 5-for-31 (.161) with no homers, five RBI, one run scored and eight strikeouts in eight games to begin the final month of the regular season in September. It remains to be seen if he'll return to the lineup for the nightcap. Overall, he's hitting a strong .315/.357/.420 with five home runs, 53 RBI, 40 runs scored and three stolen bases in his 333 at-bats. Randy Arozarena is the designated hitter and is batting cleanup, while Jonathan Aranda is at first base and is hitting third against Blue Jays right-hander Julian Merryweather.Source: Baseball Press
David Bednar Starting Rehab Assignment Tuesday
2 years agoPittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher David Bednar (back) is starting a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday for Triple-A Indianapolis. Bednar threw a live batting practice session over the weekend on Saturday and will now embark on a rehab assignment before rejoining the Bucs bullpen for the conclusion of the 2022 season this month. The 27-year-old right-hander hasn't pitched in the big leagues since July 29. Bednar did have a nice 2.70 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 17 saves and 63 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings pitched for the Pirates before landing on the injured list, but with not much time left in the season, he's unlikely to see many save chances the rest of the way. Wil Crowe has been filling in as Pittsburgh's closer of late.Source: Pittsburgh PG - Jason Mackey
Jason Adam Hit With Blown Save, Loss
2 years agoTampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Jason Adam blew the save and was hit with the loss in the 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night. In his inning of work, Adam allowed two earned runs on two hits (one homer) while walking one and striking out one. He entered the game in the eighth inning with a one-run lead but allowed a two-run bomb to shortstop Bo Bichette to lose the game. It was a hiccup in an otherwise excellent season for the 31-year-old right-hander, as he's posted a 1.54 ERA (2.83 FIP), a 0.69 WHIP, eight saves and 71 strikeouts in 58 1/3 relief innings for the Rays. He should continue to be Tampa's top setup man behind Pete Fairbanks despite Monday's subpar outing.Source: MLB.com
Kyle Tucker Drives In Three In Monday's Win
2 years agoHouston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker went 1-for-5 with three RBI in the team's 7-0 shutout win over the Detroit Tigers on Monday. Tucker has been a must-start in fantasy all year long, and he's now hitting .258/.333/.474 with an .806 OPS, 25 home runs, a career-high 93 RBI, 64 runs scored and a career-high 22 stolen bases in 532 plate appearances over 130 games played. The first-time All-Star hasn't been quite as good so far in September, going 9-for-39 (.231), but he does have three home runs, nine RBI and seven runs scored in 10 games. Keep him in your starting lineups the rest of the way.Source: MLB.com
Nate Pearson Could Return This Weekend
2 years agoToronto Blue Jays right-hander Nate Pearson (lat) could be available as early as this weekend for the team, according to interim manager John Schneider. Pearson is scheduled to pitch on Tuesday for Triple-A Buffalo as part of his minor league rehab assignment, and his potential return will depend on his outing. The 26-year-old struck out one batter and didn't give up any hits or walks in a scoreless inning in his first rehab outing on Sunday for Single-A Dunedin. He has yet to pitch in a major-league game in 2022 due to injuries. With time running out in the regular season, Pearson will likely return to a relief role in Toronto down the stretch, severely limiting his fantasy value.Source: MLB.com
Luis Ortiz Making MLB Debut In Game 2 Tuesday
2 years agoPittsburgh Pirates right-hander Luis Ortiz has been called up from the minors and will make his major league debut in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds, according to manager Derek Shelton. Ortiz is the team's No. 30 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and went a combined 5-9 with a 4.56 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 138 strikeouts and 38 walks in 124 1/3 innings over 26 appearances (25 starts) for Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis this year. The 23-year-old can hit the upper-90s with his heater, but he typically sits in the mid-90s with his fastball. Ortiz generates a lot of swings and misses with his out pitch, a slider. Because of how hard he throws, he could eventually be an arm out of the bullpen in a worst-case scenario.Source: MLB.com - Will Aldrich
Scott Alexander Earns First Save Of Season Monday
2 years agoSan Francisco Giants relief pitcher Scott Alexander earned his first save of the season in Monday's 3-2 win over the Braves. Alexander entered the game in the eighth inning up by one with two outs and a runner on third. He ended the inning with the runner stranded on a flyout and stayed on to pitch the ninth. He allowed a leadoff single but got the final three outs on a force out and two groundouts. The team's primary closer, Camilo Doval had pitched the previous two days, so Alexander got the call in this instance. The 33-year-old has only pitched 8 2/3 innings this season, compiling a 2.08 ERA. He holds no fantasy value despite the save.Source: MLB.com
Spencer Strider Takes Tough Loss Monday
2 years agoAtlanta Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider fell to 10-5 despite pitching pretty well in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Giants. Strider pitched 5 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits and a walk with nine strikeouts. The 23-year-old has thrived since joining the starting rotation and has compiled a 2.72 ERA and 13.75 K/9 rate over 125 2/3 IP this season. His next projected matchup may be against a hot Phillies lineup, but fantasy managers should feel comfortable trusting Strider with his huge ceiling.Source: MLB.com
Alex Cobb Pitches Seven Shutout Innings Monday
2 years agoSan Francisco Giants starting pitcher Alex Cobb turned in another solid start in Monday's 3-2 win over the Braves. Cobb pitched 7 scoreless innings, allowing six hits and no walks with seven strikeouts. The veteran's underlying metrics are finally starting to reflect in his peripherals, as he is 6-6 with a 3.48 ERA over 24 starts. Things won't get easier in his next start at home against the Dodgers, but fantasy managers who trusted him in a two-start week should at least be encouraged by this performance against a tough opponent. While it will be tough, Cobb has shown to be more reliable than a good deal of other starting options this season.Source: MLB.com
Emmanuel Clase Earns 34th Save Of Season Monday
2 years agoCleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase continued his dominant season in Monday's 5-4 win over the Angels, picking up his league-leading 34th save. Clase came in to pitch the ninth inning up by one and shut the door with a 1-2-3 inning and a strikeout. The 24-year-old has delivered on his high fantasy expectations this season, converting all but three save opportunities with a 1.34 ERA and a 9.20 K/9 rate. He should continue to help fantasy managers down the stretch and should be one of fantasy's top closers going into next season.Source: MLB.com
Mike Trout Homers In Seventh Consecutive Game Monday
2 years agoLos Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout continued his impressive streak in Monday's 5-4 loss to the Guardians, going 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and a strikeout. Trout crushed a fifth-inning Konnor Pilkington fastball to straightaway center for his 35th HR of the season. More importantly, this was Trout's seventh consecutive game with a long ball, putting him one away from tying the MLB record. The 31-year-old has once again been one of fantasy's most reliable performers, slashing .279/.368/.633 with 69 RBI and one steal.Source: MLB.com
Jason Adam Takes Late Loss Monday
2 years agoTampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Jason Adam was handed his third loss of the season in Monday's 3-2 game against the Blue Jays. Adam came in to pitch the eighth inning up by one. He allowed a leadoff single, got the first two outs on a groundout and strikeout, but then allowed a two-run home run before getting the final out on another groundout. The game ended with that score, making Adam the pitcher of record. Adam has been one of the many relievers used in high-leverage situations by the Rays this season and is now 2-3 with eight saves, 20 holds, and a 1.54 ERA. The lack of a defined role does limit his fantasy value in shallower leagues, but he is worth a look in all deeper leagues.Source: MLB.com
Jordan Romano Earns 33rd Save Of Season Monday
2 years agoToronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano picked up his 33rd save of the season in Monday's 3-2 win over the Rays. Romano came in to close things out up by one and turned in a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout. The 29-year-old has been a high-end fantasy option all season, converting all but four save opportunities with a 1.95 ERA and 10.41 K/9 rate. He should continue to help fantasy managers down the stretch as the Blue Jays compete for a playoff spot.Source: MLB.com
