2 years agoTampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Jason Adam blew the save and was hit with the loss in the 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night. In his inning of work, Adam allowed two earned runs on two hits (one homer) while walking one and striking out one. He entered the game in the eighth inning with a one-run lead but allowed a two-run bomb to shortstop Bo Bichette to lose the game. It was a hiccup in an otherwise excellent season for the 31-year-old right-hander, as he's posted a 1.54 ERA (2.83 FIP), a 0.69 WHIP, eight saves and 71 strikeouts in 58 1/3 relief innings for the Rays. He should continue to be Tampa's top setup man behind Pete Fairbanks despite Monday's subpar outing.Source: MLB.com
2 years agoHouston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker went 1-for-5 with three RBI in the team's 7-0 shutout win over the Detroit Tigers on Monday. Tucker has been a must-start in fantasy all year long, and he's now hitting .258/.333/.474 with an .806 OPS, 25 home runs, a career-high 93 RBI, 64 runs scored and a career-high 22 stolen bases in 532 plate appearances over 130 games played. The first-time All-Star hasn't been quite as good so far in September, going 9-for-39 (.231), but he does have three home runs, nine RBI and seven runs scored in 10 games. Keep him in your starting lineups the rest of the way.Source: MLB.com
2 years agoToronto Blue Jays right-hander Nate Pearson (lat) could be available as early as this weekend for the team, according to interim manager John Schneider. Pearson is scheduled to pitch on Tuesday for Triple-A Buffalo as part of his minor league rehab assignment, and his potential return will depend on his outing. The 26-year-old struck out one batter and didn't give up any hits or walks in a scoreless inning in his first rehab outing on Sunday for Single-A Dunedin. He has yet to pitch in a major-league game in 2022 due to injuries. With time running out in the regular season, Pearson will likely return to a relief role in Toronto down the stretch, severely limiting his fantasy value.Source: MLB.com
2 years agoPittsburgh Pirates right-hander Luis Ortiz has been called up from the minors and will make his major league debut in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds, according to manager Derek Shelton. Ortiz is the team's No. 30 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and went a combined 5-9 with a 4.56 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 138 strikeouts and 38 walks in 124 1/3 innings over 26 appearances (25 starts) for Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis this year. The 23-year-old can hit the upper-90s with his heater, but he typically sits in the mid-90s with his fastball. Ortiz generates a lot of swings and misses with his out pitch, a slider. Because of how hard he throws, he could eventually be an arm out of the bullpen in a worst-case scenario.Source: MLB.com - Will Aldrich
2 years agoSan Francisco Giants relief pitcher Scott Alexander earned his first save of the season in Monday's 3-2 win over the Braves. Alexander entered the game in the eighth inning up by one with two outs and a runner on third. He ended the inning with the runner stranded on a flyout and stayed on to pitch the ninth. He allowed a leadoff single but got the final three outs on a force out and two groundouts. The team's primary closer, Camilo Doval had pitched the previous two days, so Alexander got the call in this instance. The 33-year-old has only pitched 8 2/3 innings this season, compiling a 2.08 ERA. He holds no fantasy value despite the save.Source: MLB.com
2 years agoAtlanta Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider fell to 10-5 despite pitching pretty well in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Giants. Strider pitched 5 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits and a walk with nine strikeouts. The 23-year-old has thrived since joining the starting rotation and has compiled a 2.72 ERA and 13.75 K/9 rate over 125 2/3 IP this season. His next projected matchup may be against a hot Phillies lineup, but fantasy managers should feel comfortable trusting Strider with his huge ceiling.Source: MLB.com
2 years agoSan Francisco Giants starting pitcher Alex Cobb turned in another solid start in Monday's 3-2 win over the Braves. Cobb pitched 7 scoreless innings, allowing six hits and no walks with seven strikeouts. The veteran's underlying metrics are finally starting to reflect in his peripherals, as he is 6-6 with a 3.48 ERA over 24 starts. Things won't get easier in his next start at home against the Dodgers, but fantasy managers who trusted him in a two-start week should at least be encouraged by this performance against a tough opponent. While it will be tough, Cobb has shown to be more reliable than a good deal of other starting options this season.Source: MLB.com
2 years agoCleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase continued his dominant season in Monday's 5-4 win over the Angels, picking up his league-leading 34th save. Clase came in to pitch the ninth inning up by one and shut the door with a 1-2-3 inning and a strikeout. The 24-year-old has delivered on his high fantasy expectations this season, converting all but three save opportunities with a 1.34 ERA and a 9.20 K/9 rate. He should continue to help fantasy managers down the stretch and should be one of fantasy's top closers going into next season.Source: MLB.com
2 years agoLos Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout continued his impressive streak in Monday's 5-4 loss to the Guardians, going 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and a strikeout. Trout crushed a fifth-inning Konnor Pilkington fastball to straightaway center for his 35th HR of the season. More importantly, this was Trout's seventh consecutive game with a long ball, putting him one away from tying the MLB record. The 31-year-old has once again been one of fantasy's most reliable performers, slashing .279/.368/.633 with 69 RBI and one steal.Source: MLB.com
2 years agoTampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Jason Adam was handed his third loss of the season in Monday's 3-2 game against the Blue Jays. Adam came in to pitch the eighth inning up by one. He allowed a leadoff single, got the first two outs on a groundout and strikeout, but then allowed a two-run home run before getting the final out on another groundout. The game ended with that score, making Adam the pitcher of record. Adam has been one of the many relievers used in high-leverage situations by the Rays this season and is now 2-3 with eight saves, 20 holds, and a 1.54 ERA. The lack of a defined role does limit his fantasy value in shallower leagues, but he is worth a look in all deeper leagues.Source: MLB.com
2 years agoToronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano picked up his 33rd save of the season in Monday's 3-2 win over the Rays. Romano came in to close things out up by one and turned in a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout. The 29-year-old has been a high-end fantasy option all season, converting all but four save opportunities with a 1.95 ERA and 10.41 K/9 rate. He should continue to help fantasy managers down the stretch as the Blue Jays compete for a playoff spot.Source: MLB.com
2 years agoChicago Cubs relief pitcher Brandon Hughes certainly earned his fifth save of the season in Monday's 5-2 win over the Mets. Hughes entered the game in the eighth inning up by four with one out and the bases loaded. He escaped the inning unscathed by inducing a flyout and a line out and stayed on to pitch the ninth. He got the first two outs on a flyout and a groundout, allowed a solo home run, and then got the final out on another groundout. Hughes has pitched well with a 3.24 ERA and 10.98 K/9 rate and has started to see some save opportunities of late. He has blown four saves this season but has converted both save opportunities in the last seven days, making him worth a look in roto leagues.Source: MLB.com
2 years agoHouston Astros starting pitcher Framber Valdez was excellent in Monday's 7-0 win over the Tigers. Valdez pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. The 28-year-old has been a fantasy asset all season and is now 15-5 with a 2.50 ERA, 8.47 K/9 rate, and 3.06 BB/9 rate over 27 starts and 179 2/3 innings pitched. His next start should be another favorable one against the Athletics. Valdez has gotten fantasy managers to the playoffs and should continue to help them advance.Source: MLB.com
2 years agoLos Angeles Dodgers right-hander Tony Gonsolin (forearm) threw a bullpen session on Sunday but he is still reportedly experiencing soreness in his right forearm. Gonsolin has been sidelined since August 29 with a strained forearm. Manager Dave Roberts told reporters that he is confident that Gonsolin will be back by the playoffs, although he went on to say that he gets less confident every day that goes by that Gonsolin is not at full strength. Gonsolin is expected to throw again on Wednesday.Source: Jack Harris on Twitter
2 years agoNew York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman (leg) tossed a scoreless and hitless inning on Sunday for Double-A Somerset, walking one and striking out three in the process. It was Chapman's first minor league rehab outing, but he's expected to return to the Yankees bullpen early this week, barring any setbacks. The 35-year-old southpaw has been sidelined since late August due to a left leg infection from a tattoo. When he's back in the Bronx, he'll serve as a late-inning setup man in front of closer Clay Holmes. Chapman has struggled in 2022 to the tune of a 4.70 ERA (4.78 FIP), a 1.43 WHIP and 35 strikeouts while saving nine games in 30 2/3 relief innings.Source: Milb.com
