Javier Assad Making MLB Debut In Game 1
2 years agoThe Chicago Cubs selected right-hander Javier Assad's contract from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, and he will make his major league debut in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals. Right-hander Kervin Castro was optioned to Iowa in a corresponding move. The Cubs also selected right-hander Nicholas Padilla from Iowa as the 27th man and moved outfielder Jason Heyward (knee) to the 60-day injured list. Assad, a 25-year-old right-hander, had a 2.66 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 111 strikeouts in 108 1/3 innings over 23 outings (21 starts) for Double-A Tennessee and Iowa this season. He'll likely head back to the minors after this spot start, and he'll be a pretty risky streaming option against the streaking Red Birds.
