7 years agoIn a press conference on Wednesday, Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said that the offense is taking a “back to basics approach.” He thinks new offensive coordinator Joe Philbin will implement this effectively due to his great ability as a teacher. Philbin had previously served as offensive coordinator in Green Bay from 2007-2011. That last year was the highest scoring offense that Green Bay has had during Aaron Rodgers’ tenure as starting quarterback. However, going back to basics may not be such a positive thing. Green Bay’s offensive scheme, which they have employed since McCarthy was hired, has become outdated in the modern NFL. Defenses are far more comfortable running out five or more players in the secondary today, which mitigates some of the formational innovation that McCarthy relies on. McCarthy and Rodgers have used the back-to-basics cliché in the past. What they really need now is innovation and an evolution of one of the blandest schemes in the NFL.--Tyger McGuiggan
