NASCAR Rankings Analysis

It's time for the fourth race of the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series. For the first time all season, the series is leaving Florida, heading out west to run at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

My top-ranked driver this week is Joey Logano. Rolling off the grid 15th, Logano has won at this track twice, most recently last season. In fact, both of those wins have come since 2019, and a 14th-place finish last year broke a string nine top 10s in a row here.

Logano comes with place differential upside as well as laps led upside. Just look at how many laps he's led here since joining Penske. The number on the far right is laps led:

See, Logano's really good here.

Another driver I'm high on is Kevin Harvick. He'll start on the pole, offering some really strong laps led upside. I've shied away from pole sitters since NASCAR instituted their new starting formula because starting first doesn't mean they have the fastest car like it often means when real qualifying happens, but this is a week where I think the pole can be a huge asset.

I'm slightly lower on Martin Truex Jr. than others. He starts fourth, so there's not a lot of room to move up. He's won here twice, but only led one lap in 2020 here, despite finishing fourth in the second race. If I'm grabbing a guy who starts near the front, I'd rather it be Harvick.

In terms of value guys, I love Chase Briscoe this week. He's affordable on both sites and starts 24th. He won both Xfinity races here last season, and of the 400 laps run in those two races, Briscoe led 253 of them. That's impressive, and while we can't guarantee that translates into success in Cup, he's someone I want in a good percentage of my lineups.

You can see I'm not super high on the Richard Childress cars, which start 11th (Tyler Reddick) and 12th (Austin Dillon). Dillon finished fourth here in the first race in 2020, but that's the only top five at this track for an RCR car since 2016. There's only been one other top 10 over that span. I just see a lot of downside from these two drivers.

I've got Bubba Wallace as a top 20 play despite his early struggles this year. He starts 23rd and should have the speed to get into the top 15 provided he stays out of trouble.

And as always, the drivers ranked near the bottom are fades. Maybe Quin Houff and BJ McLeod have some carnage upside, but Vegas shouldn't produce the number of incidents that other tracks do, so you can probably avoid dipping that low into the salary pool.
