2 years agoKansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker (ankle) is considered day-to-day with an ankle sprain, according to head coach Andy Reid. Butker headed to the locker room in the season opener, but later returned to the game and made a 54-yard field goal. As some insurance, the team signed former New York Jets kicker Matt Ammendola to the practice squad in case Butker can't play in Week 2. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on Butker's status and have a backup plan heading into Thursday night's game with the Los Angeles Chargers. If he is able to suit up, he is a solid starting option in what should be a high-scoring affair.--Tommy Adamopoulos - RotoBallerSource: Peter Sweeney

2 years agoDetroit Tigers infielder Jonathan Schoop isn't in the team's lineup on Tuesday for a matchup with the Houston Astros and right-hander Hunter Brown. The 30-year-old is batting .200 this season with a .234 on-base percentage, nine home runs, and five stolen bases in 458 plate appearances for the Tigers. It'll be Harold Castro starting at second base instead on Tuesday. Castro, who is hitting second against Houston, is batting .273 with a .304 on-base percentage, and six home runs in 388 plate appearances. He's worth a look for fantasy managers in search of streaming options in deeper leagues.--Ben Rosener - RotoBallerSource: Detroit Tigers

2 years agoThe Atlanta Falcons have signed tight end Anthony Firkser to the 53-man roster after he was elevated from the practice squad last week. The 27-year-old caught one pass for six yards in the season opener, as he was one of three different tight ends to get a target in Week 1. Kyle Pitts will lead the way at the position, while Parker Hesse also remains in the mix for the Atlanta offense. Firkser could be as low as the No. 3 option on the depth chart, so he offers no fantasy appeal unless someone ahead of him misses some time.--Tommy Adamopoulos - RotoBallerSource: Michael Rothstein
Share:
2 years agoCleveland Guardians infielder Andres Gimenez isn't in the team's starting lineup on Tuesday for a matchup with the Los Angeles Angels and left-handed starter Jose Suarez. Gimenez is batting .297 with a .368 on-base percentage, 16 home runs, and 18 stolen bases in 477 plate appearances for Cleveland this year. He'll head to the bench on Tuesday with Tyler Freeman starting at second base and batting seventh against Suarez and the Angels. Freeman has logged 60 plate appearances for Cleveland this season, batting .245 with a .317 on-base percentage and a stolen base. Fantasy managers in search of streaming options are probably better off looking elsewhere.--Ben Rosener - RotoBallerSource: Cleveland Guardians

2 years agoPittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt (pectoral) suffered a torn pec muscle in the team's Week 1 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, but he will not require surgery, according to Ian Rapoport. Watt did not tear the tendon, which is why there is optimism that the reigning Defensive Player of the Year could return in as little as six weeks. Considering many thought this would be a season-ending injury, this seems like the best-case scenario for the stud pass-rusher. In his absence, Malik Reed figures to have an increased role after being acquired from the Denver Broncos prior to the start of the season. Reed has started 34 games in Denver and has accumulated 15 sacks, 124 tackles (74 solo) and three forced fumbles.--Tommy Adamopoulos - RotoBallerSource: Ian Rapoport
Share:
2 years agoKansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (wrist) is a full-go for the team's Week 2 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night, according to head coach Andy Reid. Mahomes fell on his wrist early on in the season opener but was able to stay in the game on his way to 360 passing yards and five touchdowns. This could be something that Mahomes will have to tolerate moving forward, but the good news is it isn't something that should have an impact on his performance. The former league MVP is an elite QB1 option for fantasy managers in Week 2 and should be started in all formats.--Tommy Adamopoulos - RotoBallerSource: Herbie Teope
Share:
2 years agoSeattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said that All-Pro safety Jamal Adams (quadriceps, knee) will need surgery on his serious quad/knee injury that he suffered early in the Monday night win over the Denver Broncos in Week 1. The Seahawks don't have a firm timetable yet, but it doesn't look good for Adams. The oft-injured 26-year-old is reportedly dealing with an injury that's related to the quadriceps tendon of his left knee. Adams will almost surely be put on Injured Reserve, and it remains to be seen if he'll be able to return in 2022. Fantasy managers in IDP leagues will need to search for new starting options in Week 2, while Adams' loss is a huge blow to Seattle's secondary. Josh Jones replaced Adams on Monday night and should be the starter moving forward.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: PFF - Ari Meirov

2 years agoSeattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said that rookie running back Kenneth Walker III (hernia) will return to make his NFL debut in Week 2 against the division-rival San Francisco 49ers. "Kenny Walker is going to be out there this week for us to add to that," Carroll said. The 21-year-old second-rounder had surgery for a hernia in mid-August and was inactive for Monday's Week 1 win over the Denver Broncos, but he'll return in Week 2. Rashaad Penny (12 carries for 60 yards, two catches for seven yards) was Seattle's clear lead back on Monday night and should be again this weekend against the 49ers, but Walker will slowly be eased into the rotation for Seattle. Walker should be stashed in all season-long formats, ideally by fantasy managers that also roster Penny, but he'll be hard to trust as a flex play in his first game coming off injury.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta
Share:
2 years agoPittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has ruled out linebacker T.J. Watt (pectoral) for the team's Week 2 contest against the New England Patriots. "I can definitively say that TJ won't play this week, but I won't make any commitments beyond that. We're encouraged," Tomlin said. The Steelers and Watt feared that he tore his pectoral late in the Week 1 overtime win over the Cincinnati Bengals, but after consulting with multiple doctors since Sunday, it's looking more likely that the 27-year-old reigning Defensive Player of the Year may play again in 2022. If Watt doesn't need surgery, he has a chance at returning in around six weeks. Fantasy managers in IDP fantasy formats need to stash Watt for now, as he proved again in Week 1 that he's one of the best linebackers in the game.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Brooke Pryor
Share:
2 years agoThe Indianapolis Colts tried out long-time Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Josh Lambo on Tuesday, according to a source. Current kicker Rodrigo Blankenship is already on shaky ground after missing one of his three field-goal attempts in the Week 1 tie with the Houston Texans. He also had two of his kickoffs go out of bounds for penalties that set the Texans up with great field position to start their drives. Blankenship missed most of last season due to a hip injury, so perhaps he's still dealing with that. Regardless, fantasy managers may need to look in another direction for Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars if Indy brings in another kicker.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Indianapolis Star - Joel A. Erickson

2 years agoMinnesota Vikings tight end Johnny Mundt played 40 snaps to Irv Smith Jr.'s 19 in the Week 1 win over the Green Bay Packers. "Irv is going to have a major role for us. Those guys all know how we operate. We're a game-to-game, week-to-week operation," head coach Kevin O'Connell said. Smith is fully healthy, but the Vikings coaching staff viewed Mundt as the better option against Green Bay in the season opener. The 24-year-old Smith didn't catch either of his two targets in the game and was a major disappointment for fantasy managers that streamed him. Smith did miss a lot of camp this summer after having thumb surgery on Aug. 2, so perhaps we'll see his role grow in the coming weeks. But for now, fantasy managers should consider him a low-end TE2.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Kevin Seifert
Share:
2 years agoEven though New York Giants wide receiver Kadarius Toney is fully healthy, according to head coach Brian Daboll, the young wideout only played seven offensive snaps in the Week 1 win over the Tennessee Titans. And that was with rookie Wan'Dale Robinson (knee) getting injured and being ruled out. Toney was injured much of his rookie season and dealt with a leg injury for most of training camp, so perhaps the Giants wanted to ease him into action in the season opener. The 23-year-old finished with two carries for 23 yards and wasn't targeted in the passing game. Things could obviously change as the season progresses, but this was a terrible start for Toney and his fantasy managers. Toney will have a better chance to be involved in Week 2 against the Panthers if Robinson is inactive, but he'll still be a shaky flex play after what transpired in the season opener.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: New York Daily News - Pat Leonard
Share:
2 years agoLos Angeles Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen (hamstring) is unlikely to play in Week 2 on Thursday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, but there is optimism after his MRI exam that his injury isn't a long-term issue, according to sources. With the Chargers' next game after this Thursday not until Sept. 25 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Allen will have two full weeks to rest after getting injured in the Week 1 win over the Raiders. Fantasy managers should put the 30-year-old on their benches for Week 2 action, but it's great news that he could be back as soon as Week 3. With Allen likely out this Thursday in what should be a high-scoring game, DeAndre Carter and Joshua Palmer will be much more attractive as deep-league flex plays behind Mike Williams. Tight end Gerald Everett will have a higher ceiling as a streamer as well.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero
Share:
2 years agoAs of now, the Dallas Cowboys don't have any plans to pursue a significant trade for a quarterback, barring an unforeseen change, according to a source. The Cowboys don't want to take the possibility completely off the table, but with Dak Prescott's (thumb) improved timeline after having surgery and Cooper Rush's familiarity with the offense, the Cowboys want to be patient. Those of you thinking Dallas might trade for 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo can put those rumors to rest. The Cowboys aren't putting Prescott on Injured Reserve and think he could return within the next four weeks. But for now it will be Rush leading the offense. The 28-year-old will be making just his second career start in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals, and he'll be a low-end, desperation QB2 in superflex leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler
Share:
2 years agoDallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on 105.3 The Fan that the team won't put quarterback Dak Prescott (thumb) on Injured Reserve and that he thinks Prescott could return within the next four games. The 29-year-old signal-caller had surgery to fix his fractured right thumb on Monday and was given a six- to eight-week timetable for a return. Prescott had a plate and a pin inserted into his hand to help stabilize his joint, but it seems the team is a bit more optimistic that he can return in three to four weeks just a day later. Either way, he should be stashed in all fantasy formats. In the meantime, Cooper Rush looks set to lead the offense in a Week 2 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals at home. Downgrade all of Dallas' offensive skill players until Prescott is able to return.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN - Adam Schefter
Share:
2 years agoPittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris (foot) is pretty confident that he'll play in Week 2 against the New England Patriots after aggravating his Lisfranc foot injury late in the Week 1 overtime win over the Cincinnati Bengals. "I'll be back at practice this week, and then I will be playing this weekend," Harris said Tuesday. Harris had only 10 carries for 23 yards and caught two passes for three yards and a touchdown in the season opener. Rookie Jaylen Warren is the handcuff for Harris in case he misses any time this season, with Benny Snell Jr. No. 3 on the RB depth chart. However, receiver Chase Claypool was second in rushing attempts for Pittsburgh last Sunday. There's a good chance that Harris is questionable for Week 2, so fantasy managers need to have a backup plan in place just in case.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Mad Dog Sports Radio

2 years agoToronto Blue Jays interim manager John Schneider said that starting pitcher Alek Manoah (illness) was scratched from his start in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays because he's fighting a stomach bug. Manoah is currently hydrating, and the team hopes he can recover enough to start in Game 2. Reliever Julian Merryweather is now listed as the starter for Game 1, but he'll likely only go an inning or two before making way for a bulk arm in the first game. Manoah, a first-time All-Star this year, has gone 14-7 with a 2.42 ERA (3.30 FIP), a 0.99 WHIP and a 158:41 K:BB over 171 innings and 27 starts. As long as he makes his the start in Game 2 he should be started in most fantasy formats, but he'll carry a little more risk.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Sportsnet.ca - Shi Davidi
Share:
2 years agoUpdating a previous report, Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash said that second baseman Brandon Lowe's back has been bothering him, which is why he's not in the starting lineup for Game 1 of a doubleheader on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. The team will see if he's available to come off the bench late in Game 1 and/or start in Game 2. The sore back could help explain why the 28-year-old left-handed hitter has gone hitless in his last 14 at-bats over five games. With Lowe out, Taylor Walls is starting at the keystone and is hitting eighth against Blue Jays right-hander Julian Merryweather in Game 1. DFS gamers should look for better low-cost options over Walls.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Tampa Bay Times - Marc Topkin
Share:
2 years agoThe Miami Marlins will select infielder Jordan Groshans' contract from Triple-A Jacksonville ahead of the team's game on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies, according to sources. Groshans, the team's No. 12 prospect per MLB Pipeline, was hitting .301/.399/.416 with an .814 OPS, two home runs, 10 RBI, 14 runs scored and a stolen base in 31 games for Jacksonville to earn the call-up. The 22-year-old was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays at the trade deadline early last month. The former first-rounder is worth picking up down the stretch in deep mixed and NL-only leagues, as he should see enough playing time the rest of the way to contribute in those formats. Groshans has recently become more of a hit over power guy, and he hit just three long balls in 103 combined game with Jacksonville, Triple-A Buffalo and Single-A Dunedin.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Sports Grid - Craig Mish
Share:
2 years agoTampa Bay Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe is absent from the starting lineup on Tuesday for Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays. Lowe has gone hitless in his last 14 at-bats with four strikeouts in his last five games, so Game 1 of a doubleheader is a good time to rest him. There's a good chance he'll be back in the lineup for Game 2 against Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah. The 28-year-old has been held back by injuries in 2022 and is hitting only .221/.308/.383 with eight homers, 25 RBI, 31 runs and a stolen base in 235 at-bats. Taylor Walls is playing second and hitting eighth against Jays right-hander Julian Merryweather in Game 1. Walls will be a low-upside DFS dart throw.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Baseball Press
Share:
2 years agoTampa Bay Rays outfielder Harold Ramirez is not in the starting lineup for Game 1 of a doubleheader on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. It's a good time for Ramirez to take a little breather, as he's gone 5-for-31 (.161) with no homers, five RBI, one run scored and eight strikeouts in eight games to begin the final month of the regular season in September. It remains to be seen if he'll return to the lineup for the nightcap. Overall, he's hitting a strong .315/.357/.420 with five home runs, 53 RBI, 40 runs scored and three stolen bases in his 333 at-bats. Randy Arozarena is the designated hitter and is batting cleanup, while Jonathan Aranda is at first base and is hitting third against Blue Jays right-hander Julian Merryweather.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Baseball Press
Share:
2 years agoPittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher David Bednar (back) is starting a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday for Triple-A Indianapolis. Bednar threw a live batting practice session over the weekend on Saturday and will now embark on a rehab assignment before rejoining the Bucs bullpen for the conclusion of the 2022 season this month. The 27-year-old right-hander hasn't pitched in the big leagues since July 29. Bednar did have a nice 2.70 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 17 saves and 63 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings pitched for the Pirates before landing on the injured list, but with not much time left in the season, he's unlikely to see many save chances the rest of the way. Wil Crowe has been filling in as Pittsburgh's closer of late.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Pittsburgh PG - Jason Mackey
Share:
2 years agoTampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Jason Adam blew the save and was hit with the loss in the 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night. In his inning of work, Adam allowed two earned runs on two hits (one homer) while walking one and striking out one. He entered the game in the eighth inning with a one-run lead but allowed a two-run bomb to shortstop Bo Bichette to lose the game. It was a hiccup in an otherwise excellent season for the 31-year-old right-hander, as he's posted a 1.54 ERA (2.83 FIP), a 0.69 WHIP, eight saves and 71 strikeouts in 58 1/3 relief innings for the Rays. He should continue to be Tampa's top setup man behind Pete Fairbanks despite Monday's subpar outing.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com
Share:
2 years agoHouston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker went 1-for-5 with three RBI in the team's 7-0 shutout win over the Detroit Tigers on Monday. Tucker has been a must-start in fantasy all year long, and he's now hitting .258/.333/.474 with an .806 OPS, 25 home runs, a career-high 93 RBI, 64 runs scored and a career-high 22 stolen bases in 532 plate appearances over 130 games played. The first-time All-Star hasn't been quite as good so far in September, going 9-for-39 (.231), but he does have three home runs, nine RBI and seven runs scored in 10 games. Keep him in your starting lineups the rest of the way.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com
Share:
2 years agoToronto Blue Jays right-hander Nate Pearson (lat) could be available as early as this weekend for the team, according to interim manager John Schneider. Pearson is scheduled to pitch on Tuesday for Triple-A Buffalo as part of his minor league rehab assignment, and his potential return will depend on his outing. The 26-year-old struck out one batter and didn't give up any hits or walks in a scoreless inning in his first rehab outing on Sunday for Single-A Dunedin. He has yet to pitch in a major-league game in 2022 due to injuries. With time running out in the regular season, Pearson will likely return to a relief role in Toronto down the stretch, severely limiting his fantasy value.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com
Share:
2 years agoPittsburgh Pirates right-hander Luis Ortiz has been called up from the minors and will make his major league debut in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds, according to manager Derek Shelton. Ortiz is the team's No. 30 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and went a combined 5-9 with a 4.56 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 138 strikeouts and 38 walks in 124 1/3 innings over 26 appearances (25 starts) for Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis this year. The 23-year-old can hit the upper-90s with his heater, but he typically sits in the mid-90s with his fastball. Ortiz generates a lot of swings and misses with his out pitch, a slider. Because of how hard he throws, he could eventually be an arm out of the bullpen in a worst-case scenario.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Will Aldrich

2 years agoSeattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams (quadriceps) was forced to exit early in Monday's matchup with the Denver Broncos. It was initially reported as a "serious" quad injury, which has since been described as a "torn quad." This certainly aligns with the initial prognosis, creating further concern about the extent of the injury. It's still unclear how long this would sideline the former All-Pro safety and what kind of recovery is involved. This is problematic for the Seahawks, who are lacking proven talent on their defense and gave up over 400 yards of offense last night to the Broncos. It also removes Adams as an option in IDP leagues, at least until we know more about the injury.--Josh Constantinou - RotoBallerSource: Ian Rapoport - NFL Network

2 years agoJacksonville Jaguars running backs Travis Etienne and James Robinson are one of the backfield battles to monitor. In Week 1, the total snaps were nearly even with a 51-49 split in favor of the sophomore. As expected, Robinson accounted for 60% of the carries compared to 30% for Etienne, while the reverse was true of the passing game, where Etienne saw 75% of the long-down and distance work and 100% of the two-minute offense. Perhaps most intriguing is that the 23-year-old received 100% of the short-yardage opportunities. The two project to remain in a timeshare moving forward, making both top-36 options, but Etienne should have better fantasy football production if his role stays the same.--Josh Constantinou - RotoBallerSource: Dwain McFarland - Twitter

2 years agoSan Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle (groin) missed Sunday's game against the Bears. The team seemed optimistic that the 28-year-old would suit up, further evidenced by head coach Kyle Shanahan's comment about his availability, "that's why he made the trip." Although he did not play in Week 1, there is hope for a Week 2 return, beginning with practice on Wednesday. Shanahan again discussed his outlook, "I hope he's ready to go (practice) Wednesday, but we're not sure yet." The former All-Pro is a focal point of the 49ers' offense, contributing in all facets of the game. Fantasy managers are wise to have an alternative option for Kittle again in Week 2, with more information expected after practice on Wednesday.--Josh Constantinou - RotoBallerSource: Matt Maiocco - NBC Sports
Share:
2 years agoArizona Cardinals wide receiver Rondale Moore (hamstring) did not play in Sunday's game against the Chiefs. The extent of the injury remains unclear, however, head coach Kliff Kingsbury reported he would attempt to participate in practice on Wednesday so they can evaluate what he is able to do. Despite an underwhelming rookie season, finishing with 54 receptions for 435 yards and one touchdown, the 22-year-old was a popular breakout candidate this year. The Cardinals are in need of offensive weapons, especially at receiver, so his return would greatly benefit the team. He's a player to stash on your bench until we know more about his health.--Josh Constantinou - RotoBallerSource: Darren Urban - Twitter
