2 years agoThe Chicago Cubs activated left-hander Wade Miley (shoulder) from the injured list on Tuesday and designated pitcher Luke Farrell for assignment in a corresponding move. Miley is returning to the team's starting rotation and will start on Tuesday against the Cincinnati Reds. The 35-year-old veteran southpaw has made only four starts this year, but he's allowed only six earned runs on 15 hits while walking eight and striking out 12 in 19 innings. Miley doesn't bring much fantasy upside with his 7.1 career K/9, but he's returning to a nice matchup against Cincinnati and is worth a look as a streamer in deeper formats if you still need innings.Source: Chicago Tribune - Meghan Montemurro
2 years agoThe Chicago Cubs placed catcher Willson Contreras (ankle) on the 10-day injured list with a left ankle sprain on Tuesday and reinstated Michael Hermosillo from the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move. The Cubs also designated Nicholas Padilla for assignment. Contreras' injured list stint is retroactive to Sept. 3. The All-Star backstop missed the series against the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend with more pain in his sprained left ankle. With the 30-year-old on the shelf, Yan Gomes and P.J. Higgins will share catching duties for Chicago. Contreras has been a no-brainer must-start at the weak catching position in fantasy this year, as he's slashed .246/.351/.471 with an .822 OPS, 21 home runs, 54 RBI, 63 runs scored and four stolen bases in 395 at-bats.Source: Taylor McGregor
2 years agoNew York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo (back, head) will be placed on the injured list, according to skipper Aaron Boone. First baseman Ronald Guzman will be added to the active roster in a corresponding move on Wednesday. Rizzo received an epidural injection for his back injury last week, and he's been experiencing headaches ever since. There's no timetable for his return, and there's a chance he could miss most of the final month of the regular season in September. The 33-year-old veteran left-handed slugger has hit just .225 on the season, but he also has a .339 on-base percentage, 30 homers, 71 RBI, 71 runs and six stolen bases. Infielder DJ LeMahieu will likely continue seeing most of the playing time at first base for however long Rizzo is sidelined.Source: The Athletic - Lindsey Adler
2 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler (forearm) played a little catch on Tuesday. Wheeler was pulled from his originally scheduled start on Tuesday against the Miami Marlins with renewed soreness in his right forearm. If he doesn't have any setbacks after throwing on Tuesday, he could move to a bullpen session later this week. The 32-year-old will be hoping to return to the team's rotation sooner than later, but there's not much time left in the regular season this month for him to make a fantasy impact for those still playing for a championship. In 23 starts in 2022, the veteran right-hander has gone 11-7 with a 3.07 ERA (2.97 FIP), a 1.08 WHIP, 148 strikeouts and 33 walks in 138 innings.Source: The Athletic - Matt Gelb
2 years agoCincinnati Reds rookie right-hander Hunter Greene (shoulder) is making another minor league rehab start on Tuesday for Triple-A Louisville. Greene threw scoreless innings in his first rehab outing last Thursday and he recovered well enough to make another start early this week. Look for the 23-year-old to build his pitch count up even more after he threw 27 pitches last week. He's expected to be able to return before the end of the 2022 season, but the Reds won't rush him back. Greene will continue to be very popular in fantasy drafts next year because of his strikeout upside, but he has struggled a bit to the tune of a 5.26 ERA (4.95 FIP) and a 1.29 WHIP in 20 starts while striking out 127 and walking 41 in 102 2/3 innings in his first MLB season.Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Bobby Nightengale
2 years agoCincinnati Reds second baseman Jonathan India (knee) is back at second base and is batting leadoff on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs and left-hander Wade Miley. India was injured and had to leave the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday, but he was able to heal up during the team's off day on Monday. It's been a disappointing year for last year's National League Rookie of the Year, as he's been in and out of the lineup due to various injuries. India is hitting .265/.335/.412 with nine home runs, 32 RBI, 39 runs scored and two stolen bases in 322 plate appearances over 76 games. The good news is he's gone 22-for-65 (.339) with two homers, eight RBI and 12 runs scored in 17 games since Aug. 16. Get him back into your fantasy lineups.Source: Baseball Press
2 years agoThe Miami Marlins activated outfielder Avisail Garcia (hamstring) from the injured list on Tuesday and optioned Peyton Burdick to Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move. Garcia will immediately return to the starting lineup on Tuesday against Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola, as he's starting in right field and hitting cleanup. The 31-year-old veteran will be playing in his first major league game since Aug. 2, but he did get six minor league games to shake the rust off before he was reinstated. Garcia will return to being Miami's regular right fielder to close out the 2022 season. In 323 at-bats this year, he's slashing .232/.269/.322 with seven long balls, 30 RBI, 29 runs scored and four stolen bases.Source: Miami Herald - Jordan McPherson
2 years agoMiami Marlins second baseman Jon Berti (hip) is back at second base and is hitting leadoff on Tuesday against Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola. Berti missed almost a full week with a hip injury, but he'll return to face the Phils on Tuesday. The 32-year-old has mostly been useful in fantasy for his speed, as he leads baseball with 32 stolen bases in 75 games played this year. Overall, he's slashing .259/.349/.365 with only three home runs, 21 RBI and 35 runs scored in 292 plate appearances. His fantasy managers will be hoping he can finish the season strong after he hit just .222 (14-for-63) with a homer, two RBI, three runs scored, four steals and 16 strikeouts in 17 games in August.Source: Baseball Press
2 years agoThe Tampa Bay Rays activated right-hander Yonny Chirinos (elbow) from the 60-day injured list on Tuesday and placed right-hander Drew Rasmussen on the paternity list in a corresponding move. Chirinos has Tommy John surgery in August of 2020 and hasn't pitched in the big leagues since. In three different minor league stops during his rehab outing, he had a 5.12 ERA and 1.24 WHIP while striking out 14 and walking six in 19 1/3 innings over nine appearances (five starts). Given the 28-year-old's long layoff, he's unlikely to be used all that often down the stretch, but he could serve as the bulk pitcher behind JT Chargois on Tuesday against the Boston Red Sox after Rasmussen was scratched.Source: Rays Communications
2 years agoTampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen was scratched from his scheduled start on Tuesday against the Boston Red Sox and placed on the paternity list. With Rasmussen leaving the team for a few days, JT Chargois will step in as the opener on Tuesday against Boston, but he won't have much fantasy appeal as a streamer. The 27-year-old Rasmussen could return to make his next start at some point this weekend against the New York Yankees. He's been very strong for the Rays and fantasy managers this year, going 9-4 with a 2.70 ERA (3.23 FIP), a 1.05 WHIP, 103 strikeouts and 27 walks in 116 2/3 innings over 23 starts in his first full season with the Rays.Source: Tampa Bay Times - Marc Topkin
2 years agoPittsburgh Pirates third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes (shoulder) is back at third base and is hitting fifth on Tuesday against the New York Mets and right-hander Taijuan Walker. Hayes missed a couple games with left shoulder discomfort, but he's back in there on Tuesday for the Bucs and fantasy managers. The 25-year-old has only played in one game so far in September, and he hit just .227 (15-for-66) with a homer, seven RBI, three runs scored and 19 strikeouts in 18 games in August. Fantasy managers will be hoping he can pick it up at the plate to close out the final season of 2022. Overall, Hayes is hitting .242/.311/.346 with six home runs, 36 RBI, 44 runs scored and 14 stolen bases in 422 at-bats in his third big-league season.Source: Baseball Press
2 years agoThe New York Mets are still in the process of deciding whether starting pitcher Max Scherzer (oblique) will make his next scheduled start on Friday against the Miami Marlins or get pushed back a start. Scherzer left his previous outing early with oblique fatigue. The Mets don't want to push the 38-year-old right-hander and cause him to miss the final stretch of the regular season, so fantasy managers shouldn't be surprised if he skips a start this week. As usual, Scherzer has been a must-start in fantasy in his first year in Queens, going 9-4 with a 2.26 ERA (2.53 FIP), a 0.92 WHIP, 153 strikeouts and only 23 walks in 127 2/3 frames over his 20 starts in 2022. We'll probably know for sure whether he'll make his start on Friday by Wednesday.Source: New York Post - Mike Puma
2 years agoThe game between the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins on Tuesday has been postponed due to the forecast of sustained inclement weather. It will be made up on Wednesday, Sept. 7, as the first game of a doubleheader, beginning at 3:05 pm ET. Right-hander Gerrit Cole was scheduled to start for the Yankees on Tuesday, with right-hander Joe Ryan opposing him for Minnesota. Fantasy managers should expect these two starters to be pushed back to the first game of the doubleheader on Wednesday. Fantasy managers will also need to make sure they remove any players from these two teams they may have already had in their starting lineups for Tuesday's action.Source: Yankees Twitter
2 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jack Flaherty turned in an encouraging outing in his return from the injured list on Monday. The right-hander scattered six hits, a walk, and an earned run in five innings against the Washington Nationals. Flaherty threw 91 pitches against Washington, struck out six batters, and logged 14 swinging strikes. While he wasn't able to come away with a win as the Cardinals were shut out, the 26-year-old did turn in a quality 31% CSW rate. The former first-round pick has given up six earned runs and 10 walks in 13 Major League innings this year, while striking out 12 batters.Source: Statcast
2 years agoTampa Bay Rays pitcher Luis Patino made his return to the team's rotation on Monday with a start against the Boston Red Sox. After being called up, the right-hander scattered five hits, three earned runs, and three walks in five innings of work against the Red Sox. He struck out four batters and also allowed a home run. Overall, Patino turned in 14 swinging strikes and finished with a solid 31% CSW rate. The 22-year-old has now logged a 4.34 ERA and a 5.63 FIP in 18.2 innings in the Majors this season to go along with 11 strikeouts and nine walks.Source: Statcast
